Living with ADHD in Hong Kong: Finding Support

By Jared Dubbs, MoC

ADHD in the Hong Kong Context

Hong Kong is one of the most fast-paced, high-pressure cities in the world. For someone with ADHD, this environment can be both energising and utterly exhausting. The city’s intensity can feed your need for stimulation, but its demands for consistent performance, organisation, and social conformity can push you to breaking point.

In my practice in Central Hong Kong, I work with expats and locals alike who are navigating ADHD in this unique environment. The challenges are real, but so are the solutions.

Unique Challenges of ADHD in Hong Kong

Workplace Culture

Hong Kong’s work culture values long hours, consistency, and attention to detail. For someone with ADHD, maintaining this level of sustained performance day after day is profoundly draining. The expectation to always be “on” — in meetings, in emails, in social situations — leaves little room for the natural ebbs and flows of an ADHD brain.

Academic Pressure

Whether you’re a student or a parent of one, Hong Kong’s academic system is intense. The emphasis on rote learning, standardised testing, and quiet classroom behaviour is fundamentally at odds with how ADHD brains learn best.

Stigma and Misunderstanding

Mental health awareness in Hong Kong has improved significantly, but misconceptions about ADHD persist. Many people still view it as a childhood condition that you should “grow out of,” or as a Western diagnosis that doesn’t apply to Chinese culture. Neither of these is true.

Language and Cultural Barriers

For expats, navigating the healthcare system in Hong Kong can be confusing. For local Hong Kongers, finding a therapist who understands both ADHD and the local cultural context is equally challenging.

Finding the Right Support

Assessment

For a formal ADHD diagnosis in Hong Kong, you’ll need to see a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. Private assessment is available and typically more accessible than the public system, though it comes at a cost. The public system through the Hospital Authority is an option, but wait times can be long.

Therapy

Look for a therapist who specialises in or has significant experience with ADHD — not just someone who “also sees” ADHD clients. A therapist with personal understanding of ADHD (like myself) can offer a depth of insight that purely academic knowledge can’t match.

In ADHD therapy, we focus on practical, skills-based work: executive function strategies, emotional regulation, self-compassion, and building a life that works with your brain.

Community

Connecting with other adults who have ADHD can be incredibly powerful. Hearing someone else describe exactly what you experience — and watching them nod as you describe yours — is a kind of validation that therapy alone can’t provide.

I run ADHD support groups in Central Hong Kong for exactly this reason. There’s something healing about being in a room full of people who get it.

Medication

If appropriate, medication for ADHD is available through psychiatrists in Hong Kong. Stimulant medications (methylphenidate) and non-stimulant options are prescribed. Many of my clients find that a combination of medication and therapy produces the best outcomes.

You Belong Here

If you’re living with ADHD in Hong Kong, know this: there is nothing wrong with you. Your brain works differently, and that comes with genuine challenges — but also with creativity, passion, and a way of seeing the world that others miss.
